About Lara O'Connell

I first became interested in photography back in 1993 when I got a job in a photographic studio. I was mainly dealing with the run of the studio but on occasion got to help out and see how the professionals did it. I think it was from here that I first appreciated how photography captures time and this is what I loved about it.

After a couple of years there, I did a little travelling capturing some lovely images along the way, and came back to work with Kevin Clancy who was a freelance photographer at the time for the national newspapers. Again I was helping out in the office, but I enjoyed it as I got to experience a different type of photography.

Keeping it as a constant hobby I was rarely seen without a camera at any event, but I wasn’t really interested in taking it any further than that. Then came the digital camera. Being able to see in an instant whether the shot I took worked or not was a whole new reintroduction into photography for me.

Then one day I went to see a film out called ‘Julie and Julia’ and came out inspired to do something similar with my own life. I thought about what it was that I really enjoyed doing and quickly came up with photography, so within minutes had decided to take a photograph a day for a year of my life. I began the year in October 2009 and am currently just over half way there. It is a lot harder than you can imagine, as like in the film, the obsession of having to do your chosen subject (in my case taking a photograph) every single day of your life really does consume you. But all the same I am enjoying it, and will look forward to putting it together in some manageable format of interest at the end.

Also in late 2009 I got to embark on a once in a lifetime experience where by I got to bring a sail boat from Galway, Ireland, over to the British Virgin Islands via Spain, Portugal, Las Palams, across the Atlantic to St Lucia and then up along the north Caribbean Islands to the BVI’s. It gave me a lot of time to think about what I wanted to do with my life when I got back to ‘the real world’, and so I decided that I would like to see whether I could pursue photography once and for all on a more professional level – and so here I am today.

I am currently living in Dalkey, Co Dublin, Ireland. This website used to be attached to my other profession of complementary health which I have moved to reikihm.com. I am still practising complementary health, although mainly only at weekends.
